Frequently asked questions
How do I open my clipboard history?
Press ⇧⌘V (Shift-Command-V) in any app. You can also click the clipboard icon in the menu bar and choose Show History.
The window opens in the center of the screen the first time. After that, it opens where you left it. To open it at the mouse pointer instead, go to Preferences › General › Open window at.
How do I change the shortcut?
- Click the clipboard icon in the menu bar and choose Preferences…
- Open the Hotkeys tab.
- Under Show history shortcut, click the shortcut field.
- Press the new key combination.
Which keys can I use in the history window?
- Type to search. Use the arrow keys to move.
- Return copies the selected entry.
- ⌘1 to ⌘9 copy one of the first nine entries.
- ⌘Y shows a preview of the selected entry.
- ⌘P pins or unpins it. Pinned entries stay at the top.
- ⌘⌫ deletes it.
How do I copy several entries together?
- Open the history.
- ⌘-click each text entry you want, in the order you want them. ⇧-click selects a range. Each selected row shows its place in the order.
- Press Return.
Magpie Clip joins the texts into one, one per line, in the order you clicked them. It trims spaces and blank lines at the start and end of each text. Images and files in the selection are left out.
How do I pause tracking or block an app?
Pause: click the clipboard icon in the menu bar and choose Pause Tracking. Magpie Clip records nothing until you choose Resume Tracking, even after a restart.
Block an app: go to Preferences › Privacy › Blocked bundle identifiers. A bundle identifier is the unique name of an app, such as com.apple.Notes. Type it and click Add. Or bring the app you want to block to the front, open Preferences › Privacy and click Add Active App. The button names the app it will add. Magpie Clip records nothing while a blocked app is in front.
To find an app's bundle identifier, open Terminal and run osascript -e 'id of app "Notes"' replacing Notes with the app's name.
You do not need to block password managers. Magpie Clip skips copies they mark as concealed or temporary, and anything you copy while Apple Passwords is in front.
How do I make it paste for me?
- Go to Preferences › General and turn on Paste immediately after selecting.
- Go to the Hotkeys tab and click Open System Settings.
- In Privacy & Security › Accessibility, turn on Magpie Clip.
Magpie Clip uses the Accessibility permission only to press ⌘V for you in the app you were using. This option is off by default. Without it, Magpie Clip copies the entry and you paste it yourself.
How much does it keep?
Go to Preferences › General:
- Keep up to … items: choose 25 to 500.
- Auto purge deletes entries older than 7, 30 or 90 days (30 by default). Pinned entries stay.
When your entries add up to about 200 MB, Magpie Clip removes the oldest unpinned ones first. To stop saving images or formatted text, go to Preferences › Privacy › Capture.
Where does Magpie Clip keep my data?
Only on your Mac, inside a private folder that macOS gives the app, in ~/Library/Containers. Magpie Clip has no network access, so nothing is uploaded.
The app does not encrypt the history file. To encrypt your whole disk, turn on FileVault in System Settings.
How do I delete all my data?

History and settings:

- In Finder, choose Go › Go to Folder… and enter
